Our mission is to provide innovative programs and services to improve the social and economic well-being of youth.

Our vision is to ignite confidence to embrace the future.

Our values are optimism, innovation, and creativity in programs that empower and inspire youth.

Where did it begin?

Our story began in 1998 when a group of concerned citizens started BYC, which was known at the time as the Brock Youth Centre. The goal was to establish and operate a community centre in Brock Township. The vision was to provide positive activity options for youth, offering programs in drama, arts, music, sports, and job search assistance.

Over time, BYC saw the need for certain skills and attributes in the local community and evolved into a virtual organization that focuses on youth entrepreneurship and employability skills development. This was done in an effort to address one of the highest rates of youth unemployment, or underemployment, in Canada. Originating in the rural area of North Durham, we take our programming to the youth, offering entrepreneurial education in the high schools in the Townships of Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge.

We are a charitable organization that is committed to building youth capacity by assisting young people as they prepare for the disruptive economy they are entering. We offer entrepreneurship development programs, employability skills workshops, and leadership opportunities, all of which lead to the development of a skill-set that will support their economic well-being, regardless of which direction they should choose in life.

Did something change?

We are not a typical youth centre; we have no ‘bricks and mortar’ and we serve youth in three Townships, travelling to where they are.  This isn’t changing; but in the spring of 2019, we recognized that our name, Brock Youth Centre, limited the perception of who could access and use our services. We realized we needed to broaden our horizons and so was born a new name; Building Youth Capacity (BYC).

With this new name, we are focusing on our mandate – building youth capacity – acknowledging our roots and looking ahead to our journey within and beyond North Durham.
